Don't Let Summer Holidays Delay Your Child's Vaccines: Urgent Catch-Up Reminder from UKHSA

Parents and carers across the South West are being urged to book vital vaccine catch-up appointments during the summer holidays. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) South West has issued a strong reminder as measles cases continue to rise across England, with a concerning number impacting our region.
Measles on the Rise: A Cause for Concern
New figures released by UKHSA reveal a significant increase in measles cases since the beginning of the year. A total of 674 laboratory-confirmed cases have been reported in England, highlighting the importance of maintaining high vaccination rates. Worryingly, the South West accounts for 8.6% of these cases, representing 58 confirmed instances. This underscores the need for immediate action to protect our communities, particularly young children.
Why Catch-Up Vaccinations Are Crucial
Measles is a highly contagious viral illness that can lead to serious complications, including pneumonia, encephalitis (inflammation of the brain), and even death. Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent measles and protect individuals and the wider community. The MMR (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella) vaccine is a safe and effective way to safeguard against these diseases.
Who Needs to Catch Up?
The UKHSA is specifically targeting parents and carers of children who may have missed their routine MMR vaccinations. This includes children who may have missed one or both doses, as well as older children and adults who have never been vaccinated. It’s crucial to check your child’s vaccination records to ensure they are up-to-date.
Easy Access to Vaccinations
Booking a vaccine appointment is easier than you might think. Parents and carers can:
- Contact their GP surgery.
- Visit NHS.uk to find local vaccination services.
- Check with local pharmacies, which may offer vaccination services.
Protecting Our Community: A Shared Responsibility
“We understand that summer holidays can be busy, but we urge parents and carers to prioritise their children’s vaccinations,” says a spokesperson for UKHSA South West. “Protecting our children from preventable diseases is a shared responsibility. By ensuring your child is vaccinated, you are not only safeguarding their health but also contributing to the overall health and wellbeing of our community.”
Don't delay – book your child's vaccine appointment today and help prevent the spread of measles.
