A former New Zealand detective is raising serious concerns about how rapidly evolving technology, particularly advancements in computer software and artificial intelligence (AI), are impacting the ability of police to effectively pursue and prosecute offenders. This isn’t just about increased workload; it’s about a fundamental shift in the landscape of online exploitation and the challenges it presents for law enforcement.

“It’s exhausting,” the detective, who wishes to remain anonymous, told NZ Herald. “The sheer volume of data we’re dealing with is staggering. And the techniques used by offenders are becoming more sophisticated, aided by AI and readily available software. We're constantly playing catch-up.”

The Technological Arms Race

Historically, investigations relied heavily on identifying and tracing images and videos. While this remains crucial, the advent of AI-powered tools allows offenders to manipulate and disguise content, making detection significantly harder. Deepfakes, for example, can create incredibly realistic but entirely fabricated scenarios, blurring the lines between reality and deception. Furthermore, encrypted messaging apps and the dark web provide safe havens for offenders to communicate and share illegal material, making tracking and interception extremely difficult.

“Offenders are using AI to generate fake profiles, automate messaging, and even create convincing simulations of interactions with children,” the detective explained. “This makes it harder to identify victims, gather evidence, and ultimately, bring perpetrators to justice.”

Impact on Investigations

The increased complexity translates directly into longer investigation times. What once might have taken months now stretches to years, placing an enormous strain on resources and impacting the wellbeing of investigators. The detective highlighted several key challenges:

• Sophisticated Techniques: Offenders are leveraging AI and software to mask their activities and evade detection.

The detective believes a multi-faceted approach is needed to address this growing challenge. This includes:

• Increased Funding: Investing in specialised training and technology for law enforcement.
• Collaboration: Strengthening partnerships between police, tech companies, and international agencies.
• Public Awareness: Educating children, parents, and educators about the risks of online exploitation and how to stay safe.
• Legislative Reform: Updating laws to keep pace with technological advancements and ensure effective prosecution of offenders.
